Eighteen local bands have pooled their talents for a new local CD project, "A Musical Tribute to the Cheyenne Skate Park."
Each group was asked to submit one track to the project.
The CD's release party was at Ernie November on Nov. 3. Then, 20 copies were sold to supporters of the skate park and to fans of the local bands that took part in the making of the CD.
Since then Ernie November has sold 15 copies, said Keith Coombes, manager of Ernie November. Only 100 copies of this limited release were made.
"It's great for the community as well as the cause, and it also helps out a lot of Cheyenne bands that are unknown to a lot of people," Coombes said.
The CD features a wide variety of genres - R&B, rap, metal, scremo (a lighter version of hardcore music that is more emotional) and country. All of the proceeds of the CD go toward the Cheyenne Skate Park.
Richard Johnson is a local skateboarder and fundraising coordinator for the park. The CD is yet another one of his ideas to provide funds for the facility.
Johnson knew people in Switchblade Affair, Falling Untrue, Eyes Sewn Shut, 3 White Guys and a Black Skater, Imperium and Deadspeak, which is why those bands were selected for the CD.
MySpace.com came in handy when Johnson searched for the rest of the bands.
"I went under zip code and searched by the bands' play lists," Johnson said. "I looked for every kind of genre of music and asked the bands if they were interested in contributing a track."
Johnson's friend, Than Wilson of Skibo's Tattoo, did the cover art of a green skull in the middle of three pink roses. Wilson also produced the CD; he is a guitarist with the local metal band Deadspeak.
The music for the CD had to be original, which was the only requirement for the CD.
The CD, Johnson said, is the best way to cross reference all of the music played in Cheyenne.
"If anyone wanted to see what Cheyenne's music scene is like, they could buy this," he added.
The skate park recently received $10,000 from this year's Bootification Ball, which went toward Phase 4 of the project.
"Phase 4 of the skate park is not all the way funded, and we still need funding for the Phase 5 part - landscaping and barbecue pits," Johnson said.
