Paul favors shift in foreign policy

By Brandon Quester

bquester@wyomingnews.com

CHEYENNE - Ron Paul (R-Texas) told a modest audience Sunday that he is running on a platform of what he doesn't want to do if he were elected president.

Some of the most resounding of those issues were that he doesn't want to stay in Iraq and he definitely doesn't want to raise taxes. He also doesn't want an Internal Revenue Service or large government organizations like the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

But according to his pep-rally speech held at the Cheyenne Depot Plaza, he does want to downsize the government to represent what he said the Founding Fathers intended when they drafted the United States Constitution.

Paul visited Cheyenne on Sunday afternoon in his effort to raise campaign money and speak to local community members regarding his presidential platform.

Paul said he chose Cheyenne because there are a lot of financial supporters in the area and because Wyoming's intention to hold an early primary.

With a growing number of supporters from the Internet, Paul said that he believes he has a chance at becoming the country's next president.

Paul added that he is sick and tired of what is happening in the United States and that the people need change.

One such change, he said, is dealing with issues outside the United States.

"We have to change our foreign policy," Paul said. "It's way out of proportion for what we need to do."

Paul said he supports an immediate withdrawal of American troops from Iraq.

"The lessons of Vietnam are worth looking at," he said. "That's why we need to quit (in Iraq). Everything we do has an unintended consequence."

Paul added that the situation abroad would get much better if America pulled out of the war.

Although Paul said that he supports American troops, he did say that people who agree with the current war should be open- minded and look at the other side.

Carol Wagner of Fort Collins, Colo., said that she came to hear Paul speak because she believes in what he has to say.

"He's (Paul) the only one that sticks to the Constitution and I think he's the last hope for our country," Wagner said.

"People want change. People are tired of what's going on."

Although Wagner recognized that there are other presidential candidates ahead of Paul, she did say that she thinks he has a chance.

"It may be an upward battle, but I think we can do it," she said.

Joe Marty of Colorado Springs, Colo., agreed with what Wagner had to say and feels that the Constitution is important.

"He's the only one you hear talking about the Constitution. He's consistent," Marty said.

Following the rally at the Depot Plaza, Paul held a fundraiser dinner at the Plains Hotel.

" As a veteran and American I support Ron Paul all the way.Nobody should have been sent to Iraq to fight anyone unless there was a war declaration. Dr. Paul pointed that out at the very outset and offered a war declaration that was consistent with the Constitution. It did not pass. What did pass was a use of force resolution that can't be found in the Constitution. Either we have a Constitution or we do not. Under Paul we have one and under the others we do not. It is just that simple. The reason Ron Paul will be elected is far bigger than Ron Paul himselfit is the message of freedom Freedom is popular. Very popular. "

It is worth adding that Ron Paul voluntarily chooses not to participate in the very lucrative Congressional pension plan which, in my opinion, is one of the main incentives for even well-intentioned politicians to become corrupted because their need to get re-elected soon exceeds their need to do what is right or what they campaigned on. Ron Paul is principled. He has been saying these things for decades. Watch his web site on Nov. 5th. There will be a flood of donations that day. There's a story in it. ;) "

So, briefly, see this video to get an idea of the size of the crowd: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKVvgyIEqbQ The videographer, who was there, estimates 300+ people. The footage shows at least 100. I would guess there were 200. If 200 people is a "modest" crowd for a Cheyenne political rally, what, pray tell, is a large one? " "Ron Paul (R-Texas) told a modest audience Sunday" One comment. To put this all in perspective: Ron Paul drew a crowd of around 300 people to this event. 80+ donated $500 or more to the campaign, that's 40K. While Duncan Hunter, another Candidate, had a fundraiser going on above Paul could hardly gather a handful of support. That's a stark contrast in my book. And a crowd of 300 isn't very modest when you consider that any other GOP contender would have a hard time bringing in that much attention, let alone enough passion to get people to drive from as far as Montana! I wish Mr Quester, who was presumably there, would have made a numerical estimate for the information of those of us who were not. However, I did my own research and found other attendees at the function estimate 200-300 Ron Paul supporters gathered. From what I can see and hear in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKVvgyIEqbQ&feature=PlayList&p=5542A2CB59DF18E1&index=0&playnext=1 , that estimate is probably realistic, though I can only see around 100 for sure in the footage. My guess would be around 200. If 200 excited and loud supporters is a modest-sized crowd for Cheyenne, what, pray tell, is a large one? Talkin' 'bout Cheyenne, not Denver! " Thank you for your clear reporting about Ron Paul's position on the war. I feel that no other candidate supports the troops better. That is perhaps the reason that Paul gets more military donations than any other candidate. Paul supports full funding for each mission including the body armor and vehicle plating we sometimes only get to our high-paid contractors like Blackwater. Paul supports reasonable analysis of each mission. He supports a renewed effort to go after bin Laden for instance (remember when that was the mission?) but believes we should modify our plans for interminable policing of Baghdad (much like the British who have succeeded in turning over policing back to the Iraqis in nearly every area . . . because they have no other "need" to keep a large presence in said areas). Paul is perhaps the only candidate that seems to openly listen to each report coming from our military in Iraq. He is informed, honest, and reasonable. Some of the other candidates seem to have chosen a foreign policy that they neither re-consider in light of current reports nor even seem to understand very well. "

There is huge support for the Paul campaign that the polls and media are not recognizing due to obsolete survey sampling and journalism paradigms that don't react quickly enough to rapid change in the social-political landscape. A few of the more nimble news organizations are staring to realize what an enormous historic event is starting to unfold, and they are researching his positions on the issues carefully, realizing that there's amazing substance to this guy's principles. People are tired of caustic, corrupt politics. Ross Perot and others tapped into it from a populist perspective, but Ron Paul has the power of the Constitution on his side! "
