Hordes of Democrats expected at caucus

By Baylie Davis
bdavis@wyomingnews.com

CHEYENNE -- Record turnouts at Democratic Party primaries and caucuses across the country have Wyoming Democrats preparing for similar numbers at county caucuses March 8.

“It has blown things out of the water. We’re trying to look at the numbers from other states and plan accordingly,” Wyoming Democratic Party communications director Bill Luckett said Wednesday.

“It’s a really great problem to have; too many people in Wyoming want to be involved.”

With so many expected to show up, Luckett said he wants to make certain that people know one very important fact: caucuses are only open to registered Democrats. Participants must register by this Friday, and anyone who did not vote in the 2006 general election must re-register. Registration only takes a few minutes, he said, and can be done at the county clerk’s office.

Luckett anticipates having to turn people away on March 8 because they did not register by Feb. 22, or because they have been purged from the system because they haven’t voted since before 2006.

Laramie County is planning for 500 participants, Laramie County Democratic Party communications director Nicole Novotny said. For that reason, it has moved its caucus to the Cheyenne Civic Center, a facility that is equipped to handle the large number of participants.

But the party didn’t have the $2,000 required to make that move until the opening of U.S. Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign office in Cheyenne, Novotny said.

There, it was discussed that that the original space, the University of Wyoming Family Practice Center, might not be big enough.

“People basically passed around a hat and raised $1,800,” Novotny said. “People are excited about it and wanted to make sure we had appropriate accommodations.”

In other states, parking has been a problem at voting sites that were bombarded by four or five times as many participants as expected. People may have to walk a couple of blocks, said Luckett, but he doesn’t anticipate any additional parking woes than the Civic Center usually sees for events.

Once voters are registered, have set their alarm clocks Saturday morning (registration begins at 8 a.m.) and find a parking place once they get there, they can expect to be herded into a large room with hundreds of fellow Democrats.

The first order of business will be the presidential preference vote, where participants will vote for whichever Democratic Party nominee they like.

The Laramie County Democratic Party will use a ballot system to vote, as opposed to an open caucus, where people are separated based on their preference and heads are counted.

After their votes have been cast, people are free to leave, and many will, Luckett predicted.

But the presidential preference vote is just one of several decisions that will be made that day.

After the results from the presidential preference vote are determined, those who stay will vote from among them for the delegates that they want to represent their candidate at the Wyoming Democratic Convention.

Laramie County gets 55 delegates to send to the Wyoming convention, and those 55 will be portioned out based on the percentages of votes that each candidate gets at the primary.

The 55 that are chosen will go to Jackson in May to decide from all of the county delegates the 18 that will represent Wyoming in Denver at the Democratic National Convention.

While it is assumed that the delegates will vote for the candidate they were chosen to represent, Luckett said there is no law or rule requiring them to vote based on the decision made at their caucuses.

“They are to vote their conscience,” he said.

After voting for delegates is complete, other party business will be attended to and voted on.

If most people arrive early -- closer to 8 than to 9 -- and get registered and ready, it could only take an hour to cast the presidential preference votes, and the whole event could be finished in a few hours.

However, if everyone arrives at the last minute to register, and the votes are debated and drawn out, it could take much longer.

Unfortunately, because caucuses are not controlled by the government but by individual parties, time off from work is not guaranteed like it is for a presidential election.

But because it’s on a Saturday, the party is hoping that won’t be a major obstacle, Luckett said.

Leave it to a democrat to call white black and try to prove it.

No, Iam not greedy for wishing to keep what I earn. I don't ask you to pay my bills, you shouldn't ask me to pay yours.

Those programs benefit individuals and thus are their responsibility.

If you want healthcare and family planning you should have to go and buy it just like I have to and stop stealing from me and other taxpayers.

Just because "the people" want something doesn't mean they have the right to take it.

Sorry, you're dead wrong.

That sense of entitlement will kill us. Stay out of my bank account!

Pork is controlled by the voters. They vote in reps that will steal for them, then are surprised when these reps and their government are crooked.

If you stop demanding pork and quit selling your vote to the highest bidder, things will improve. "

" David, you forgot a couple: Medicare drug benefit, farm subsidies, draught relief through FEMA, non-competitive contracts for military services that the military should be doing for themselves (like setting up tents and cooking beans). Bottom line, pork is a reality from either party. People a lot more important than you or I decided a long time ago that the way to get votes is to throw out some good old fashioned bacon. You have to get past that and look toward the policies that matter. "

David, I disagree with you. It's the sense of greed you exhibit that is killing our nation. It's that philosophy that allows Corporations to run the country instead of the people. The people want Healthcare, Family planning(which is money better spent than say...abstenance only which DOESNT work), Roads, etc. al, and those things ARE NOT COST FREE. Taxes ARE necessary, and each one of us ARE Responsible for the use or non-use of those programs as they benefit the whole not the individual. "

" Is it just me or do we have a motley crue of presidential candidates this time around. No one can actually say that any one of them meet the true criteria of a President. History dictates that Obama will never achieve this office because dispite his flair the U.S. as a whole will never except a black president nor will it except a woman and her feminist indecisions and compulsive mother instincts.

On the other side you have McCane who is nothing more than the lesser of the evils. He would be nothing more than a puppet and munipulated as he was when he was a POW. And after reviewing his age and health I just don't think personally that he would make it through the full term.

Ladies and Gentlemen let's face it , we may not have a substantial candidate for another twelve years. "

Great way to muddy the argument. You are probably one of those types that will argue that the general welfare clause of the constitution can be used to justify ANY federal program.

Everybody, even the farthest right will agree that law enforcement, defense and highways qualify under that clause.

Welfare, AFDC, utility assistance, bailing out idiot homeowners, healthcare; none of these qualify.

The democrat candidates tell you that if you can't afford it, we'll steal it for you from your neighbor, legally.

Doesn't change the fact that anyone that receives government subsidy for things that they should be providing for themselves are THIEVES.

That sense of entitlement is what will kill our nation.

I am NOT RESPONSIBLE for your healthcare, family planning, drug treatment, joblessness or sub-prime mortgage. Neither is any other taxpayer. "

As far as Iraq they were telling the WHOLE world that they had W.m.d"S so why would we not believe them? WHAT Bush TOLD THE whole world WAS AMERICA WAS NO LONGER GOING TO PUT UP WITH COUNTRY'S WHO SPONSER TEARREST!
Iran stop there WMD research after we went into Iraq so did most of the country around them. has Iran restarted most likely so it not the time for a touchy folly president. but one who will stand up for America first and foremost.
If other countries are fine with having no right and liberty's that's fine but when they are a threat to us it's time to act before they hit us again. that's what the bush doctrine is "never again!"
as far as poll numbers
a president should not look at how popular he is but what is right for the country. chasing poll's like Clinton and Obama is not good for the country.

What will kill our nation and constitutional form of government is citizens that have this sense of entitlement to the property of others and the representatives they elect.

YOU and these representatives have no right to use your suffrage to take from others to enrich yourselves. There are no exceptions. You don't have the right to healthcare or anything else that has to be paid for by your neighbor.
