Blue Eyes, Broadway & blazing fiddles

An overview of the Cheyenne Civic Center's new season

By Karen Cotton

He's not exactly Old Blue Eyes - but almost.

Frank Sinatra's son is set to open the 2008-2009 season at the Cheyenne Civic Center.

Dru Rohla, the director of the center, said Frank Sinatra Jr. will perform here on Sept. 19.

"It's 'Sinatra sings Sinatra,' and the 36-piece orchestra is conducted by his father's conductor," Rohla said. "I'm really looking forward to this because it's unique. It's not just someone covering someone else's music; it's his son covering his music."

Rohla said the Civic Center is offering a new way to buy tickets.

"It will be the first time that you can custom pick the season's events," he said. "There is going to be seven shows, and you can pick a minimum of five shows or all seven. You can mix and match."

In order to buy season tickets, a person must pick five, six or seven shows.

"I decided to mix it up and give people a choice," Rohla said. "Maybe they don't want to see a particular show, have seen the Lettermen too much or something.

"I thought it would be fun to try something new. It would be fun to offer people some choices."

A musical, "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" will take place on Oct. 18. Rohla said several Colorado venues are also hosting the tour, which is one of the reasons why he chose it.

"It's a Tony Award-winning Broadway show," he said.

It features six young people who learn that winning isn't everything and losing doesn't make you a loser.

On Dec. 19 the stage welcomes back the Irish Tenors.

"They were here two years ago," Rohla said. "This is their Christmas concert. They'll be bringing in their full orchestra."

PBS helped the tenors launch their career in 1998. They have a number of best-selling albums.

They are known for singing songs like "My Heart Will Go On" from "Titanic;" Jimmy Kennedy's "South Of The Border" (Down Mexico Way); and some of their traditional songs - "Danny Boy," "My Wild Irish Rose" and "Fields Of Athenry."

In February, the Canadian blazing fiddle group, "Barrage" will hit the center's stage.

The Denver Post reviewed the show when it recently was in the Mile High City and said, "'Barrage' is too Wow for Words!" the Barrage Web site says.

They perform contemporary and world music.

Two American Idols will perform in the touring production of the 30th anniversary tour of "Ain't Misbehavin'" on Feb. 28. Ruben Studdard and Frenchie Davis are touring with this production.

This is not the first time Idol stars have been found in touring productions of Broadway.

Fantasia was in Oprah's "A Color Purple" on Broadway, and Diana DeGarmo was in "Hairspray on Broadway.

Another Broadway show heads into the center on March 28, the national touring production of "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels."

The show is based on the 1988 film that starred Steve Martin.

On May 9, as the season closer, the Lettermen will once again grace the center's stage.

" What do I want to see? How about a strong blues/rock act or two? Joe Bonamassa or Kenny Wayne Sheppard would be fantastic younger acts. Even someone like David Gilmour who would blow the roof off of the Civic Center with its great acoustics. Gilmour would likely be expensive, but would still sell out.

There is nothing WRONG with the acts they book, but they do appeal to a limited audience while seemingly ignoring the rest of us. "

" The shows at the Civic Center are fine for what they are. However, they are not what I would pay money to see. What about the rest of us? Is there a good reason that Civic Center should NOT have rock or country acts? It's not like they are booked every night. "

" RT:
I really want to know - What do you want to see? Have you been to a play or musical? Or a great concert that isn't rock or country?

The season looks great to me, and I'm well under 55.

" Once again NOTHING for those of us under the age of about 55. "
