Coaxing tourists

CHEYENNE -- So far, extreme gas prices don't seem to have affected tourism in the state or in the Capital City.

But state and Cheyenne tourism officials are preparing for a potentially tough season.

As Wyoming's second-leading industry, tourism has an important effect on the state's economy.

Historically, gas prices haven't had much of an effect on tourism to Cheyenne, Darren Rudloff, the president and CEO of the Cheyenne Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, said.

"However, this time might be different, simply because there's been so much discussion of problems in the housing market, problems in the overall economy and, of course, gas prices adding on to that," he said.

Both Cheyenne and Wyoming tourism agencies are advertising more aggressively to the region this year, hoping to draw Wyoming's neighbors as much as possible.

Rudloff said his agency is marketing more to Colorado, Nebraska and Wyoming and trying to target people who are considering taking shorter trips.

Alan Dubberley, deputy director of Wyoming Travel and Tourism, said inquiries to his office are up by 49 percent over this time last year.

"But we also have never seen gas prices this high, this early," he said.

For that reason, they have almost doubled the advertising dollars spent on regional marketing this year.

There are two types of vacationers, Dubberley explained: the two- to five-day travelers and the seven- to 10-day ones.

This year, they will be trying to reach more of the two- to five-day and weekend variety in order to make up for any long-term ones they might lose.

The state also is expecting to see an increase in foreign travelers this year, he said, particularly from Europe and Japan.

Lynn Birleffi, executive director of the Wyoming Lodging and Restaurant Association, said the U.S. is a good buy right now, and compared to overseas, gas is cheap here.

She added that the report she has gotten from hotels across Wyoming is very positive.

"At this point, there doesn't seem to be any impact," she said.

Cheyenne Frontier Days markets mostly to the region, even during good years. And every year, CFD tries to estimate what the economy will do, General Chairman Charlie West said.

"But we've had the inclination for several months now (that this year might be tough)," he said.

That's why they're offering some night shows for lower prices, hoping to entice regional vacationers to attend, West said.

He added that they expect to see the same numbers this year as in past years, but more of them might be one- or two-day visitors instead of week-long ones.

Rudloff said Cheyenne has seen some "flattening out" of the market, and hotels are seeing some lower numbers. However, the slowdown could be coming from decreased business travel as well as leisure.

"We're bracing to have some negative impact from the slowdown in the economy and the rising gas prices, but we're aggressively taking steps to try to shift our strategies to prepare for it," he said.

"But you never know. We might have a fine year, and we'll be laughing about it in the fall."

" I think someone's been fudging the numbers a bit. There is no way that CFD has anywhere near the numbers it did in the 80's and 90's when there was a "Cowboy" resurgence. Pancake breakfasts? I see more locals there than tourists. The Carnival? Lamer than ever. Cheyenne Day Block Party? Doesn't even exist anymore. "

" So everyone wants tourists and then they want to complain about the tourists.

Cheyenne has the best gimmick going for it. It's small, peaceful, and not crowded. Why would you want to bring all those belching motor homes and obnoxious easterners to the city? "

" HEY can't a guy get a beer over here and put on a cowboy shirt and hat and just spit on something and call some longhairs and mescans some dirty names and ride on a trailer with a bunch of other drunk phonies and pretend like we're important because Japanese tourists might think we were in the rodeo they paid $100 to see and now my I actually believe I am in the rodeo too, even though I just rip off folks selling them real estate, insurance and ugly clothes that they'll be too embarrassed to wear when they get home to their town or city that might actually be making a real contribution to the state of the nation or world unlike cheyenne that contributes little else than a place for trains to get fixed and some tweakers and trash that think looking like Vanilla Ice or Kenny Rogers is still cool but what the heck, tourists don't need to know that part of this 'adds nothing to the big picture' place they think actually is home to real cowboys here in a CITY where all the real cowboys live because that's where all the cows live---right? "

" In the event that this year's CFD does and will go down as the worse on record I place the blame solely on the shoulders of anyone that know's our Civic Leaders. From those in the Council , Commission , Leads , Tourism Board and the three major hotel's along with price goughing by the park and Bill Haynes. Even the Terry Bison Ranch has now built a Dining Car for an added attraction for their meeger little circus but we all know even they have slipped in service over the past decade due to hiring out-siders that have no clue as to how to operate a Food Service business let alone a Dining Car that has to have the food transported some two hundred yards from the kitchen to the train, how sanitary and effecient is that. Has everyone in this town lost their mind's. Face-lifts and paint wiull not help what our Civic Leaders have distroyed... "

" As long as CFD continues, there will be tourist business in Cheyenne. No doubt, but to answer Grizzled Old Man, the kids that are running around town with the skateboards, baggy pants, doing drugs aren't the tourists! They are the kids in this town that figure they won't get caught doing anything wrong because all the cops are at Lion's park or directing traffic during the parades! This town is getting worse each year and if Cheyenne isn't willing to grow with the changes, it will die out and Casper (or a different city)will end up the Capital city. Maybe that isn't such a bad thing. "

Since nobody else has the decency to point this out to you I will: The kids with the baggy pants, loud music, and smoking drugs are the NATIVES. All the wannabe hicks are either part time CFD wannabes, or they are the TOURISTS! Get a clue old man! With that, I bid you adieu. "

" Ralph - you are the one living in the past - if you have moved what is your concern with Cheyenne at all? To old man - not every kid is bad. Yes, CFD is overpriced but there are steps being taken to correct that.
I do have to agree with the statement clothes don't make you a cowboy - we do have a few that embarass the rest of us who know that but what society doesn't?

Joe Behindingham wrote on May 16, 2008 8:44 AM:

" What the CFD Council and Tourism Board need is a mandatory placement of people UNDER 35. Old ideas from old people don't incite change or inspire people to drive all the way here from wherever. Why don't we have a weeklong Alternative Music Festival to accompany CFD? It would definetly fuel the economy with young money. "

For ME wrote on May 16, 2008 6:24 AM:

" For me, CFD use to mean all my family got together, we ran into all our buddies, enjoyed the rodeo and we knew almost everyone on the rodeo circuit. It was a gathering of good people for good times, now it is so commercial, it has lost the fun. Carnival is too expensive, too many people, prices are just outrageous. Now we all gather at a friends house near the park and listen to the night show concerts from the backyard and eat our cheap hotdogs, corn and burgers. We cant even afford to walk around the carnival, since you have to pay to get in. Sad indeed. Then ofcourse you have all the CFD wannabe comboys (committee). They are an embarrassement all dressed up and looking like idiots...you can tell a REAL cowboy from a drugstore cowboy. Clothes do NOT make you a cowboy.. "

How delusional for the president and CEO of the Cheyenne Area Convention and Visitors Bureau to dismiss the current economic conditions of Cheyenne. He replicates the same dogma as Mayor Jack Spiker.

They're kids running around with their baggy pants and skateboards and celluphones and loud music. I think that Frontier Days should be only allowed for Wyoming residents over the age of 25. Back in my day, Frontier Days used to be a western celebration. Now all it's good for is bringing in these so-called "tourists" so that they can race around town in their loud cars and smoke drugs. The way that King Spiker is running this town, it'll be going straight to hell in a handbasket. Ahhhh cinnamon gravy! "
