Females only at forthcoming gym, spa and sauna

By Lindsey Erin Kroskob
lkroskob@wyomingnews.com

CHEYENNE - It's time for the women of Cheyenne to get ready for a new kind of fitness center.

The Sedona Fitness Center and Spa is tailor-made just for the ladies - and that is why they are the only ones allowed to join.

This 4,200-square-foot gym, set to open in August, is equipped with a full set of cardio and weightlifting equipment, an infrared sauna, a full spa and a Plexiglas enclosed play area for kids.

"We are just going to be a one-stop shop," Sedona owner Dr. Sandra Guidry said. "Take care of your body and your mind."

Although there are a few fitness centers exclusively for women, Guidry said this one is different because it really is the total package.

"We have such a wide variety of machines," she said. "You need to challenge your muscles in more than one way."

She explained that this includes a workout regimen that includes both cardio and weightlifting.

Women will never gain the mass from weightlifting that men do because they do not have enough testosterone, she said.

But lifting is still important because strong muscles lead to strong bones, and women are more susceptible to osteoporosis.

That is why when a woman joins Sedona they will have an individual evaluation to assess their goals and look at family history.

"We are going to help them devise a plan for their physical fitness," Guidry said.

Additionally, there will always be employees available to explain equipment and make recommendations.

Stephanie Wortman has known Guidry for many years and plans on joining Sedona when it opens.

"It's wonderful to have a medical perspective with health and fitness," Wortman said. "I just think it's about time we have this here in Cheyenne."

Wortman said she has joined several gyms, but the idea of a women's-only fitness center is ideal.

"The statistics are that 80 percent of women would prefer to be in a women's-only facility," Guidry said. "And here in Cheyenne, I think it's even more."

She explained that the total environment of Sedona is meant to be calming and comfortable.

"As women, I think we just acclimate to higher and higher levels of stress," said Wortman, who works as a private practice psychotherapist. "You have to rejuvenate yourself."

The goal is to help women feel excited about their health and provide a place for them to get away and relax.

"I want anybody who feels like they can benefit," Guidry said. "That's every woman."

Just because a man stares and slobbers does not mean you are hot. Men are pigs and have no standards, its all good as long as his friends do not find out how ugly you are. And nearly all really attractive women will never make a comment about how good they look. If you are complimenting your own looks you are likely not very attractive, but look on the bright side if you do not whine and complain you might fall into "she has a good personality" category. "

" I only have a problem with women's only gyms if men are not allowed to also have men's only gyms (and men-only gyms do exist in the US). It is rather tough in a small town like Cheyenne, because people have fewer options as consumers and a large new business that only caters to women will seemingly exclude a larger percentage of the population. I personally like lifting free weights, don't mind lifting with men. "

" The guys that are claiming discrimination, go to the gym and drop a dumbbell on your head. Might knock some since into you. So what if women have a gym of there own. I would still go to the gym if it wasn't such a social event. I work out from home now because I hate how people sit around on the equipment and socialize. Then you have the women that don't know how to use the equipment and spending too much time trying to figure out how to use it(this is where having thier own gym is good). I want to go to the gym and workout. I don't want to be around the muscleheads that can't stop staring at themselves, the guys that think they are Don Wan and the women that don't know what they are doing. So give me my own gym and we can call it Gym Without Idiots!. I guess that isn't very nice of me is it. I better not go forward with my idea because I am sure I would offend someone and then they would sue me! "

I'm sure the tall thin ladies you saw them with were paying for the personal trainer services the gym provides. They are there to make money, not to give you basic Physical Education you can get from buying a 5 dollar magazine or 15 dollar book. The fact they were thin might have something to do with they fact they work out regularly, consult the personal trainers, eat right, and read up on the latest fitness trends to change up their excercise routines to keep their bodies guessing so that is doesn't store fat as easily. Maybe if you would have spent less time looking at everyone else and actually did the workouts it would have been more sucessful for you. For you men that are jelous that you do not have a spa in your gym, I'm sure there are several spas around town that would like for you to give them your business. So what if this gym only allows women. I know that many older women do not feel comfortable working out with men in a co-ed gym. Also, you men like to hog the equipment. All of you who are bashing this idea probably do not even go to a gym, if you did you would not care about this particular one because you would already have a gym you like. For those of you who are scared that all the 'Hot" chicks will leave your gym you can settle down because I'm sure that the younger gals will still attend the co-ed gyms. Also, just think you will not have to be offended by us older, well developed women. 2nd - most women in Cheyenne do not speak Spanish - most women here speak English only.

" I am thankful for a woman's only workout and spa. There is no way I would join a co-ed place. I know many other women who feel the same way. Main thing for this be a success is for it to be affordable. "

" Seems like great idea to get an assessment from a medical standpoint at this spa. Too bad it's Dr. Guidry's big idea. She's not that great of a doctor and can be very rude and insulting when it comes to a person's weight/fitness level. It must just come with the territory of being an endicrinologist...

Hope the new center is successful though! "

" Who cares if a guy is there, they are into what THEY are doing, not there to pick up women. IF we can ALL afford it, then it's great, if not then take your snotty, up in the clouds PRIVATE club and go back to CO or CA or AZ and breath your own air. Bet they are building this thing WAY UP NORTH of Cheyenne for the RICH too, noted no address was shared in this little post. "

" It's nice that the ladies of Cheyenne will have their own place to exercise. I remember growing up in Cheyenne and attending a men's only racketball and fitness club with my dad. I can also remember when the club was forced to allow women to attend because of discrimination issues. Is there a double standard here? "

" "The statistics are that 80 percent of women would prefer to be in a women's-only facility," Guidry said. "And here in Cheyenne, I think it's even more."

What statistics? Why would even more Cheyenne females prefer a non-coed spa setting? If the statistics are accurate, could you imagine the Cheyenne female boycott of the Cheyenne rec center that was voted down? Perhaps that exclusive female attitude influenced the Mayor Jack Spikers six penny tax rec center defeat.

Congratulations to the private enterprise that created the Sedona Fitness Center and Spa. "
