Dems hopeful of breaking tradition in Senate races

CHEYENNE - The last time a Democrat represented Wyoming in the U.S. Senate, Apple Computer was just being incorporated and the state of Utah executed Gary Gilmore by firing squad.
That was 1977.
Wyoming Democrats know they face a difficult task if they hope to turn the traditionally Republican state in their favor.
But optimism reigns, and no matter how long the odds, the Democratic candidates insist they can win in the two U.S. Senate races where Republicans have the advantage of incumbency and tradition.
"I might have to dig around in my backyard for a while and see if I can come up with $2 million," joked Chris Rothfuss.
Rothfuss is challenging Sen. Mike Enzi, R--Wyo., whom he believes has at least a $2 million re--election fund.
Enzi, a former Gillette mayor and state legislator, has been in the Senate since 1997. The last Democrat to hold that Senate seat was John J. Hickey in 1962.
Rothfuss, a University of Wyoming chemistry professor, said Friday that he will be roaming around the state in the weeks leading up to the Nov. 4 general election.
"I have very little money," he said, estimating that he may have $20,000--$25,000 in donations at this point.
"The uphill battle is made worse by financing," Rothfuss said. "I won't be able to do any heavy advertising."
He takes no political action committee money, he said.
"I'd rather be able to work around" the lack of PAC money, he said, because he sees the enormous sums spent on elections as a corrupting influence.
Since he is considered a very long shot to unseat Enzi, money from national Democratic organizations is not coming to him.
But the individual contributions are not small to the people who have given to him, he said. "They want change."
So Rothfuss said he will be knocking on doors and attending as many forums as possible.
He hopes, he said, that he will be able to debate Enzi in as many forums as possible.
Calls to the Republican candidates, their surrogates and Wyoming Republican Party officials were not returned.
Democratic candidate Nick Carter, an attorney from Gillette who is challenging Sen. John Barrasso, R--Wyo., is thought to have a better chance. So his contributions are substantially higher.
"I think we are doing really well," Carter said. "We are closing the gap."
The last Democrat to hold that seat was Gale W. McGee in 1977.
Earlier this week, Gov. Dave Freudenthal, a Democrat, said he would endorse no one in the race because he had appointed Barrasso, a Republican.
The winner between Barrasso and Carter will serve the remaining four years of Sen. Craig Thomas' term. Thomas, a Republican, died in June 2007, and under the system for replacing a U.S. senator, Freudenthal had to pick from candidates submitted by the Republican Party.
Barrasso has more money than Carter but with a short time in office is considered more vulnerable than Enzi.
The Carter campaign expects to do substantial media advertising in the closing weeks of the campaign, he said.
Still Wyoming requires face--to--face campaigning, Carter said.
"We are still going door to door," Carter said, and he hopes to appear at eight or nine political forums in the upcoming weeks.
And he is optimistic that the tide will turn in his favor.
"Wyoming people are ready for something that's new," he said.
Rothfuss points to the popularity of Freudenthal and his re--election as governor as proof that Democrats can make inroads in Wyoming.
"(Voters) have to be convinced," Rothfuss said.

If Gore was president, he'd still be worrying if whether we should be apologizing to someone for 9-11.
The president has little control over the economy. They enact some policies, but if you want to know who controls it, go look in the mirror and see the reflection. Interest only subprime mortgages had a lot to do w/ this. Plus the public's own ignorance of credit, running up credit cards and not paying them back. "

Nothing you have said has been factual so far so what credibility do you have to make such an outlandish claim that us out here are 20 years behind. I maintain we are 20 years ahead and want to see a thriving, strong, america that operates under a different set of rules than what's been laid out for us by this failed republican notion of corporatist/fascist economics.
If you want to be just another tool of the corporate economy then go right ahead gary but i prefer a nation that is lead by level head intellectuals that can think their way through a situation rather than make decision based on who can get the richest the fastest.
is that you gary? are you one of the wealthy elite of the world? i seriously doubt you are so you are to blame for giving these fascists your support and giving up your god given right to self determination. just drop out gary because you aren't contribution to the solution, you are the problem! "

There is no one answer to the issues, just as there is no individaul party with all the right answers or candidates. It does take a little more effort on the part of the voter to learn about individual candidates but it is well worth it. Vote for the candidate that you believe will actually represent you, not some national party that could care less about what happens to Wyoming. "

The market correction we are experiencing now is not a result of a particular political party holding power, but is a simple case of irresponsibility and greed that can only be fixed with better oversight and responsibility on the part of both lenders and borrowers. Like your parents always told you, save your money!
I am an independent voter who supports Trauner and Obama because both are rational and intelligent, as well as Enzi and Barrasso because they too have the best interests of the country in mind and are willing to compromise to get things done. At the end of the day that is the one and only thing that voters should be concerned about, not the petty social issues that everyone enjoys constantly bickering about. Vote with your head not your heart! "

blaming the lack of legislature in the last year and a half on the democrats is like saying thunder is caused by the gods bowling.
maybe in your simple mind that's how things work gary but out here in the real world us grown-ups tend to see the reality of the situation which is this: the republicans have been in control of congress since 1994. the dems have gained a very marginal majority in the house in 2006. the democrats CANNOT do whatever they please because first they DON'T have the votes to ramrod whatever they want through congress and even if they did what do you think king george would do? probably use his veto power which he has never done with any republican sponsored bill.
Please do your homework gary, your ignorance is showing and it isn't pretty. "

You forgot to mention a gigantic number...a $3 trillion surplus when Clinton left the White House. How can someone be so dumb as to waste away that much money? Leaves people to believe how much money little Bush has lined his pockets with before he leaves. I say think twice before voting for another republican. "

I am sick to my stomach that there are so many ignorant republicans too focused on their worthless political faction and someone's middle name that they fail to see things for what they are. The truth is, McCain was a worthless pilot kept in the Navy only because of his father's status. He is nothing more than a shapeshifter who changes to advance his own ambitions. In 2000 he was the anti-Bush, now he is a carbon copy. Gov. Freudenthal has done a fantastic job and proven that Democrats belong in Wyoming and are not always liberal demons like you idiots try to make them out to be. Get the facts before you speak, you make the rest of us look bad. "

It seems ridiculous to blame them when your party has controlled the White House for the past eight years and Congress for six years of the past eight years. Your representatives, President, and Presidential candidate all pushed deregulation. Now, they suddenly want oversight of the financial industry. "

I think the only reason Freudenthal won't back Carter this time around is because he wants a shot at a federal office next time around. And in order to do that he doesn't want to look like too big a democrat so he can get all of those Rhinos that have put him in office for two terms, to put him in Washington. "
