M. R. “Dick” Mason will be celebrating his 90th birthday on Jan. 9.
He was born in Sheridan, but grew up in Cheyenne. Dick graduated from high school in 1950. He later attended both Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska, and the University of Wyoming before being called into the service in 1952. During the Korean War, he served in the 130th Station Hospital in Heidelberg, Germany, in the dental service.
After being honorably discharged, he worked on all three missile systems: the Atlas, the Titan and the Minuteman. Later, after returning to Wyoming, he worked 10 years for the state of Wyoming and 28 years with the city of Cheyenne.
Dick married Meridee Haefele in 1991 and they recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They have one daughter, Kimber, and son-in-law, Jim, and four grandchildren, Aren, Matt, Ryan and Allie, all out of the Louisville, Colorado, area.
Dick was recently awarded the Korean Ambassador for Peace Medal at the state Capitol by the Korean Consulate General, Sangsoo Yoon.
