CHEYENNE – A fire Tuesday destroyed a large building in Burns owned by a company that made pellets for wood-burning stoves, according to Laramie County Fire District 1 Chief Darrick Mittlestadt.
The blaze erupted around 12:30 p.m., Mittlestadt said. One person was inside at the time, but after briefly trying to fight the fire with a fire extinguisher, he was able to leave the building unharmed.
Eventually, it took crews and equipment from seven different agencies more than seven hours to extinguish the fire, Mittlestadt said. In addition to Laramie County Fire Districts 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6, crews from F.E. Warren Air Force Base and the Wyoming Air National Guard provided mutual aid.
Mittlestadt said eight water tenders shuttled more than 30,000 gallons of water to the blaze from the intersection of County Roads 144 and 207.
The American Red Cross also provided assistance by feeding firefighters at the scene.
No cause of the blaze has been determined, and Mittlestadt said that may be tough, since “there’s not much left.”
