CHEYENNE – The owner and pilot of a single-engine plane that crashed south of Carpenter died around 5:42 p.m. Saturday.
Zane G. Schmeeckle, 62, of Fort Morgan, Colorado, died in the crash, Laramie County Coroner Rebecca Reid confirmed Wednesday. He was the pilot and only occupant of the plane.
Reid said the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash. Autopsy reports are also pending at this time and could take several weeks to complete, she said.
The plane was a Bellanca 7GCBC Citabria “C” Package and had the registration number N5502S. It crashed in a field, according to the Flight Safety Foundation.
