An unidentified man is suspected to have killed himself early Saturday morning after barricading himself in a south Cheyenne motel room.
Laramie County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Capt. Linda Gesell said in a news release that the identity of the man is being withheld while his family is notified.
According to the release, deputies responded to the Round-Up Motel at 403 South Greeley Highway Friday night to follow up on a lead from Colorado authorities that a wanted man was staying there.
Shots were fired from inside the room when deputies arrived around 9:30 p.m. One of the bullets grazed a deputy in the hand. He was taken to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, treated and released.
Gesell said no shots were fired by law enforcement during the incident.
The situation became a potential hostage incident, and the Cheyenne Police Department/Laramie County Sheriff’s Department combined SWAT Team responded to the scene, along with the Crisis Negotiation Unit.
The Crisis Negotiation Unit made contact with the man, who claimed to be holding a woman hostage and have explosives inside his room. He told authorities he had her duct-taped in the bathroom and threatened to blow up the hotel room he was in.
Negotiations went on for hours, with no surrender.
The man cut off all communication with law enforcement just after 2:30 a.m. SWAT deployed tear gas and entered the room to find the man dead of a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was found to be alone, with no woman and no explosives inside.
Once the scene was safe, the investigation was turned over to the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation.
Gesell said the man allegedly stole a black 2007 Nissan Frontier in Colorado, and that vehicle was located at the Round-Top Motel.
She said the Westminster Police Department just north of Denver was trying to locate a possible suspect in the disappearance of a Westminster resident. The same person also had a warrant for attempted murder out of the Wheat Ridge Police Department, which is about 10 miles south of Westminster.
