A young man recently asked me if I could define the word politician in my own words. I replied that people who run for office most generally do it because they want to use their education, talents, personality and experience in life to help others have a better life. They encourage self-sufficiency, but at the same time fight for and support programs that give people a little push in the right direction.
In politics, there are no real friends or enemies; only differences of opinion, support or vengeance. A politician has to have a tough hide and always follow his convictions, because there will be people who will try to buy, bribe or manipulate him. They have to be able to face criticism, but not let it get to them, especially when they feel that they are doing their best. In other words, they must remain firm, regardless of what they have to endure.
