What an irony that the Lincoln Memorial, built in 1922 to help heal divisions from the Civil War, is being used by the ego-challenged president to politicize the nation's birthday.
As a president, he should be above this, but obviously he is not. The Republican National Committee should know better than to aid and abet his antics, but it is not.
I am guessing that many of the "guests" required to be there would far rather be elsewhere. I feel sorriest for those government workers who will have to work hard before, during and after this charade to put this embarrassing event on in competition with the traditional Fourth of July celebrations occurring nearby in D.C.
Happy birthday, America. We deserve better than this.
