An open letter to the Wyoming State Legislature:

Wyoming’s public lands provide opportunities for unparalleled outdoor recreation. They are the basis for our lifestyle, and they are crucial for our economy.

The undersigned outdoors businesses represent a growing industry that brings billions of dollars into the state each year, employs tens of thousands of Wyomingites, and generates hundreds of millions of dollars in annual state and local tax revenue.

But Wyoming’s outdoors industry is under threat by a national movement to transfer federal public lands throughout the West to states. In Wyoming, this would result in less public access, public lands sold and/or leased for decades, and a shift in management away from protecting the open spaces and wildlife habitat upon which our businesses depend.

Currently, the Wyoming State Legislature is considering a constitutional amendment that would lay the groundwork for public land transfer in Wyoming. We call on our representatives to vote against this amendment and any other misguided public land transfer efforts.

Federal management of Wyoming’s public lands is not perfect. But transferring these lands to the state is not the answer. The outdoors business community will work with state and federal officials in any way we can to improve public lands management for everyone. But transferring federal public lands to the state is a reckless effort that will make Wyoming poorer in the long run.

Respectfully,
