CHEYENNE – An interception with 34 seconds left by Blaine Allen sealed the victory for Thunder Basin en route to a 27-21 win over Cheyenne East in the Class 4A semifinals.

It took until 4:54 remaining in the first quarter for a team to get on the board, as Thunder Basin’s Mason Hamilton connected on an 18-yard pass to Tanner Richards. But the extra point went wide right, resulting in a 6-0 lead for the Bolts.

Hamilton and Richards connected again early in the second to lead 13-0. The pair reached a hat trick with 5:48 remaining in the half from 6 yards out to bring the Bolts’ lead to 20-0.

East only needed 41 seconds on their ensuing drive to finally get on the board when Chance Aumiller hit Jackson Hesford for a touchdown, but the extra point was no good.

Thunder Basin scored again before the half on a 10-yard run from Hayden Lunberg to lead 27-6 at the half.

Hesford caught his second score of the night on a 12-yard pass from Graedyn Buell, followed by a 2-point conversion to bring the game within two scores, 27-14.

East kept their momentum going in the fourth, scoring on a 13-yard pass to Christian Anderton from Buell to trail 27-21.

Thunder Basin had their chance to close out the game, but failed to convert a 4th and inches with 47 seconds left to allow East a chance to sneak out the win. But Allen’s interception with 34 seconds left off of Buell squandered any hope for East.

Buell finished 22 for 44 and 224 yards and two scores. Hesford had eight grabs from 86 yards, while Aumiller finished with 63 yards from five receptions. Anderton rushed for 44 yards on 12 attempts.

“The first half was a huge difference against us,” East head coach Chad Goff said. “In the third quarter, having to punt twice hurt us as far as time. The fourth-and-inch and not converting it and allowing them to run clock off hurt us. Our kids battled, got the ball back and gave us a shot. You have to give Thunder Basin’s defense credit. They’re good, and they’re No. 1 for a reason.”
