Rock River

A historic season for Rock River basketball came to a close Friday at the Wyoming Class 1A State Basketball Tournament in Casper.

Both teams — playing in the tournament during the same season for the first time in school history — bowed out during Friday’s consolation games.

The Longhorns (6-20) led Hanna-Elk Mountain 37-33 after three quarters before losing 56-50 to end their first trip to state since 1971. Hanna-Elk Mountain outscored the Longhorns 23-13 in the fourth quarter.

The majority of the offense for the Rock River boys came from junior Tristan Bunce, who had a game-high 24 points. Sophomore Elijah Cox also scored in double figures with 12 points.

The Longhorns had 18 field goals compared to 16 for Hanna-Elk Mountain. But the Longhorns were just 7 of 12 from the free-throw line, while Hanna-Elk Mountain was 17 of 27.

The rebounding was fairly even with 39 for Hanna-Elk Mountain and 34 for Rock River.

Hanna-Elk Mountain was led by Shane McGraw’s 17 points and Basil Phillips adding 16 points.

Rock River girls

The Lady Longhorns went toe-to-toe offensively with their opponent in the first quarter with Hulett having an 18-17 advantage.

But the Rock River girls were outscored 37-23 the rest of the way to end their state tournament with a 55-40 loss.

Again, the main difference was at the free-throw line. Hulett was 18 of 31 from there while the Lady Longhorns were just 3 of 4. Rock River had 18 field goals to Hulett’s 17.

Sophomore Lydia Moore led the Lady Longhorns (17-9) with 26 points. Juniors Taylor Broyles and Emma Lysholm-Sander each had seven points to complete the scoring for Rock River.

Hulett had the advantage on the boards by outrebounding Rock River 54-43.

Hulett was led by Jordyn McNamee’s 16 points and Emma Jay’s 14 points.
